Major Square -The Plaza Mayor of Madrid was built on the orders of Philip II in the place of a market of Arab origin, outside the city walls, over the dried bed of an old lake; the King, who had just chosen Madrid to be his kingdom's capital, wished a monumental square where he could have fairs and shows for his illustrious visitors.
The first building finished, in 1590, was Casa de la Panaderķa (bakery house), for the bakers' guild; the town hall, across the plaza, had to wait another 30 years. The square buildings had six floors but were totally made in wood; this led to a fire, in 1790, that created the opportunity for a reconstruction in stone. In 1992, the whole square was cleaned and restored, and that's when the mural paintings now decorating the Casa de la Panaderķa were made.
